WANA (Sep 22) – Iran’s state broadcaster has confirmed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

According to the broadcaster, the meeting was held at the request and insistence of the U.S. side, with the main purpose being to convey Iran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s position on the requirements for reopening the strategic waterway was presented to the U.S. side during the meeting.

The conditions cited by Iran include the immediate lifting of the maritime blockade, the immediate release of all Iranian assets that have been frozen, and an end to the war on all fronts involving the resistance groups.

U.S. President Donald Trump also said on Tuesday that American and Iranian officials had held a meeting, describing it as “very productive.” Trump said the meeting had lasted about three hours and that Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law and adviser, Jared Kushner, had participated.

Trump also said plans had been made for further meetings “in the near future.”

His comments came only hours after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said no meeting with Iranian officials was currently scheduled, while adding that plans could change.

Trump, however, also repeated his previous threats against Iran, again referring to the “destruction” of Iran.
