Israel widely condemned after killing of 5 Al Jazeera staff in Gaza

Funerals have been held for five Al Jazeera staff assassinated by Israel in a targeted attack in Gaza City.
- Al Jazeera condemns the killing of correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Moamen Aliwa, and their assistant Mohammed Noufal, calling it a “desperate attempt to silence the voices exposing the impending seizure and occupation of Gaza”.
- The Committee to Protect Journalists is calling for accountability, the National Press Club urged an inquiry and the Freedom of the Press Foundation appealed for action to halt further attacks on the media.
- Australia says it will recognise Palestinian state at the United Nations in September.
- Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 61,430 people and wounded 153,213. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023, attacks, and more than 200 were taken captive.
