US Warns Sri Lanka of Secondary Sanctions If Supplies Provided to Stranded Iranian Tankers

By Ceylon Today -October 2, 2026

COLOMBO — The United States has warned Sri Lankan authorities that imposing secondary sanctions could follow if logistics or supplies are provided to 19 Iranian-linked tankers stranded off the country’s southwestern coast, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

The U.S. Embassy in Colombo has reportedly briefed Sri Lankan government officials on the matter. Following the communications, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) informed several of the vessels—which are currently facing shortages of food, fuel, and fresh water—that delivering supplies is not advisable at this junction.

The Wall Street Journal further reported that in mid-September, the U.S. Embassy conducted a three-day training session attended by over 40 Sri Lankan officials.

During the program, officials were cautioned about the risks of falling under U.S. secondary sanctions if local shipping agents, bunker suppliers, or service providers render assistance—whether “knowingly or unknowingly”—to sanctioned vessels.
